A door that lifts crooked or hangs low on one side has usually lost a lift cable. The cables connect the spring system to the bottom brackets on both sides of the door. DASMA tells owners to inspect them for fraying and says that, because of the spring tension involved, they should be replaced only by a trained technician. The bottom brackets are under extreme tension too, which is why many manufacturers fit tamper-resistant hardware there.
When a cable fails we find out why before we replace it: a frayed strand, a cable that jumped its drum, a bracket that bent, or a roller that jammed. We inspect the second cable closely, since it carries the same load at the same age. Then we set the cables on the drums or pulleys, reset the spring balance, and test that the door rises level.

Corrosion is what we watch for on Gulf-side cables. DASMA's standard for lifting cables requires a corrosion-resistant coating on the wire and lists stainless steel as one of its two typical materials, but Amarr is clear that salt spray is harsh on steel door parts. So we check each cable along its length and where it ends at the bottom bracket and the drum, the places where rust and broken strands show first.
For rust staining or broken strands anywhere on a cable, replacement is the fix; cleaning the cable does not restore lost strength.
